Long Beach to Coney Island - 20 miles

Details

  • 20 miles (and a bit) in 9ish hours at a brisk pace
  • Boardwalks, sidewalks, 2 bridges and 1 longer stretch on the beach
  • Note: limited drop out points due to Rockaway A train closure!

MEET:
Meet 8:30am at Penn Station where the LIRR trains leave (East End Gateway 7th Ave, close to the long escalators).
We will take the 9:06 am LIRR train to Long Beach arriving in Long Beach at 10:02am. If you come directly to Long Beach, meet us at the train station at 10:02am. Walk starts promptly.
Bathrooms: Use bathrooms at Penn Station or on the train. We will also stop at the beginning of the walk on the Long Island board walk. Plenty of bathroom options along the walk.

WALK:
This walk is a great preparation for the Great Saunter.
It is point-to-point from Long Beach to Coney Island via Rockaway.
Terrain: boardwalks, sidewalks, 2 bridges, 1 stretch on the beach.

In Long Beach we will walk along the Oceanfront Boardwalk and some city streets until we cross the Atlantic Beach Bridge into Rockaway after about 5.5 miles. From there, we walk south along the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk.

Lunch break is at Beach 17. Bring food and water. No shops near lunch spot.

Dropout points in Rockaway: Note that there are only replacement buses to Howard Beach (A train)! Please check transport details on the MTA website:
https://www.mta.info/article/service-changes-line-and-rockaway-park-shuttle-2025

After 11.5 miles walking, we will reach Rockaway Park - Beach 116 St Station for those who want to catch buses to Queens or Brooklyn, or the ferry back to Manhattan.

Everyone else continues walking south on the boardwalk and then along the beach towards Fort Tilden. We then walk across the Marine Parkway Bridge into Brooklyn. There are dropout points in Flatbush Ave (Q35 bus) and Sheepshead Bay. Our walk will end in Coney Island.

Good to know:

  • Bring water, food, snacks, sunscreen/ hat/ glasses.
  • Not many dropout points due to Rockaway A train closure. Check the MTA website for options.
  • The sand is compact by the water, but it can still be a bit strenuous when we walk on the beach.
